“Colors”: A Poem by LindoYes!

“Colors”: Spoken Word Performance

“Colors” Lyrics

I’m grateful every morning
I don’t wake up a
#hashtag

A trending
Topic of tragedy
A black and brown body
Outlined in white,
red blood watering concrete
Because of shades of blue

White lies defining how
Black Lives Matter
My God

There’s a war on colors
Ever since we been coloring in coloring books
They been booking colors in books of obituaries

You should be worried (no text needed)

Cause even those that survive
Lose years of their life
In beige and gray boxes
With no windows

When they come out
You can barely see the souls
through their windows
They look lost

And I’ve lost myself in tears
Found myself here
Crying
‘Cause I haven’t yet
Grieved over Trayvon
He look so much like me
When I saw him
I thought
I died

Became a #hashtag
In the morning
A trending
Topic of tragedy
A black and brown body
Outlined in white,
red blood watering concrete
Because of shades of blue

White lies defining how
BlackLivesMatter
My God

Let’s raise Sons (suns) like morning
Too many Sons we’re mourning
Too many raisins in the sun
Too many raisins in the sun

Let’s raise Sons (suns)  like morning
Too many Sons we’re mourning
Too many Son’s we’re mourning
Let’s raise Sons like morning
Too many Son’s we’re mourning

My God

Please don’t let me be a #hashtag in the morning
